Located just 18 miles outside of Durango, Vallecito Lake is beyond blessed in the beauty department. It is home to one of Colorado’s largest sparkling blue lakes and surrounded by picturesque snow-capped mountains and some of the tallest pine trees you will ever see. The location is practically the embodiment of Colorado. What makes it so unique is that it offers the ability to disconnect while also being connected (if you so choose). John Muir put it best when he said, “Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” In our fast-paced world, it’s important that we make our homes, our sanctuaries. And there is no better sanctuary than Vallecito. Escape to Vallecito and find out why it’s one of the most splendorous places on Earth.
Things to See
This probably does not come as a surprise, but Vallecito is littered with gorgeous views! Lakes, mountains, forests, wildlife are daily snapshots of what you’ll see. Put those all together with a beautiful Sunset and your heart might explode. Here are just a few snapshots of what you are missing out on.
Food and Drink
In the immediate Vallecito area, there are three very popular restaurants that people line up to frequent. One of my favorites is La Comida Ranchera Mexican Food. If you’re craving authentic Mexican Food, you’ll find it here. In fact, I really believe this is some of the best Mexican food you’ll find in the Four Corners. And with a largely diverse menu, you could eat all three meals here for several months without trying the same thing twice!
What about a place with great food and a view? Have dinner on the lake at this Jimmy Buffet-themed restaurant. Their menu offers something for everyone – from Costa Rican food, to burgers, to New Mexican favorites! Their margaritas and tempting desserts will have you dreaming about this place. Check out Pura Vida Cafe menu!
There is little you can’t do here in the way of recreation. In the warmer months: Boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, hunting, ATV riding, horseback riding, and paddle boarding, are just a sampling of what you can do. In the Winter: Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating and more. You’d have to try really hard not to have a good time here.
If the recreation is not enough to tempt you, consider seeing Vallecito’s “Tour of Carvings”. It’s a dedication to the Missionary Ridge Fire of 2002. Here you’ll see multiple artistic carvings generated from the singed forest. The carvings are wildly realistic.
If you want to surround yourself in some of bustle of “city life,” you can drive less than a half hour in just about any direction and find yourself endlessly entertained.
Feeling like an easygoing and romantic date night? How about a dinner AND a movie? Enjoy a relaxing dinner, great entertainment and the historical feel of Downtown Durango at the Henry Strater Theatre.
If you’re feeling bolder, try your luck at Sky Ute Casino. This is another place besieged with accommodations such as a spa, live entertainment, concerts, steak or seafood dinners, bowling, and mini golf.
For a more well-known destination, visit Mesa Verde. This place is guaranteed to stoke the adventurous spirit in just about anyone. It is home to over 600 of the world’s best-preserved cliff dwellings. There’s so much to see just from the road! Better yet, they offer guided tours and self-guided hikes.
Ready to Make Vallecito Your New Home?
If you’re not convinced by the details above, a look at these properties will have you sold! Vallecito has so much to offer you!
Nicknamed, “The Trout House,” this waterfront lodge is where the creek meets the reservoir. Nothing says Colorado like the stunning lake, stream and mountain views offered right out your front door. This home only gets better as it comes “turnkey”. Meaning it’s complete with furnishings, bedding, linens, kitchen utensils, and most of the artwork. Fish off your deck or kayak from your front porch! This location would definitely lend itself to a lucrative Bed and Breakfast or Vacation Rental. This is truly Colorado’s adventure paradise at its finest.
One of the last large development parcels left in the Vallecito Valley. Surrounded by majestic mountains, yet flat and usable! Over 22 acres of land with rare senior water rights. This land has multiple access routes to paved county roads and encompasses the edge of the lake making it the perfect opportunity for someone looking to build condos, start a golf course, build a high-end resort, etc.
Another wonderful developmental property in Vallecito. Right on the edge of Vallecito Lake, this property has tremendous potential for development with over 30 prime acres! The land is preserved through a conservation easement and was granted permission to be subdivided into 3 parcels, each with large building envelopes. This property is heavily treed, but opens up into several pristine meadows.
There is water everywhere – from the lake to the south, Grimes Creek along the east border, and several small stream braids, ponds and irrigation laterals. Junior water rights also come with this property!
