Fall tends to be one of Durango’s slower seasons, but that has more to do with people’s upcoming holiday schedules than it does lack of activity here. In fact, Durango almost becomes more fun with Fall Festivals, Costume Contests, Pumpkin Patches and more. For those who are not fond of crowds, know that this time of the year and pretty much all of October is a great time to see the colors change! As an avid hiker, this is probably one of the most favorable times of year to hike. The weather is moderate – not too hot or cold – and the sights are AMAZING. Here’s what to do in and around Durango this time of year:

Durango Cowboy Gathering
October 5 – October 8th
A unique event where for three days, Downtown Durango transforms into a spot for storytellers, poets, musicians and other artists to gather and share their talents “to perpetuate the traditions of working ranch people in the American West”.
Durango Cowboy Parade
October 7th, 10:00am-10:45am
The largest motor-less parade in all of Colorado. Durango stays true to its historic, cowboy feel with a parade of cowboys, cattle and horses. This is a great event for the whole family. A chuck-wagon breakfast is probably my favorite part. $10 for adults and free for kids 5 and under.
October 7th, 11:00am-5:00pm
Perhaps a little less family friendly (but super fun!) is this beer-centric event is great for those of us who are kids at heart! There will be Autumn-inspired beers, food vendors, yard games, contests and more. And this year it’s being held where you can see some of Durango’s most vibrant fall colors – Purgatory resort.
Peanuts Great Pumpkin Patch Express
October 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, 2017
This Charlie Brown-themed train ride is spectacular. Not only will your kids have the opportunity to meet characters like Snoopy, Charlie and Lucy, but they will get to pick their very own pumpkin. Tucker your kids out with bounce houses, mazes and wagon rides. It’s the perfect family fall event!
Children’s Halloween in Downtown Durango
Durango has some unique neighborhoods for trick or treating. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes that means houses are acres apart, making it harder for kids to score big with their candy. For parents looking for a better or even an extra trick or treating opportunity, this is it! Kids 10 and under gather in Downtown Durango where nearly 75 businesses will hand out candy!
That’s right! Fireworks in the Fall! Due to fire restrictions on the 4th of July, Durango has opted to instead use of firework stores for Veteran’s day. How perfect is that!
Come see Durango in a new light. If not for these events, for the changing colors, snow-capped mountains and crisp Autumn air. For more events in October and November, check out this calendar: https://www.durango.org/events/calendar/2017/10/
